Do I need a visa to visit Iraq?
Yes, most visitors to Iraq require a visa, but the process varies based on nationality and the region within Iraq you plan to visit. Iraq is divided into Federal Iraq, with Baghdad as its capital, and the autonomous Kurdistan Region, centered in Erbil. Each region has its own visa policies.
If you are not eligible for a visa on arrival, you will need to apply for a visa through your nearest Iraqi embassy. We can assist with this process by providing an invitation letter (LOI) and handling necessary documentation. The cost for this service is $400, excluding the embassy visa fee.

The best time to visit Iraq is from October to April when the weather is cooler and more comfortable for travel. Summers (May to September) can be extremely hot, especially in southern regions, with temperatures often exceeding 45°C (113°F).
Iraq experiences a mix of climates due to its diverse geography. In general, the north experiences mild winters with occasional snowfall, while central and southern regions have very hot summers. The autumn and spring months offer moderate temperatures across the country, making it ideal for travel.
Although Iraq is generally arid, rain is common during the winter months (November to March), particularly in the north. Rainfall is scarce in southern regions but can bring much-needed relief from the desert heat.
What currency is used in Iraq?
The official currency of Iraq is the Iraqi Dinar (IQD). US dollars are sometimes accepted in major hotels and tourist areas, but it’s recommended to use Iraqi Dinars for local purchases.
ATMs are available in major cities like Baghdad, Erbil, and Basra. However, access may be limited in remote areas, so carrying cash is advised. Some ATMs may accept international cards, but availability can vary.
It’s best to bring cash as credit cards are not widely accepted outside of upscale hotels and select businesses in larger cities. Having cash on hand, particularly in Iraqi Dinars, will make transactions easier.

Iraq operates on a 230V supply voltage with a frequency of 50Hz. Most outlets are compatible with type C and D plugs.
Travelers from countries using different plug types (such as type A or B) will need a power adapter. It’s advisable to bring a universal travel adapter for convenience.
Power outages are relatively common in Iraq, especially in rural areas. Most hotels have backup generators, but it’s a good idea to carry a portable power bank for charging devices.
