Spend your first full day discovering Baghdad, beginning at Liberation Square, a prominent gathering place that reflects important chapters of the capital’s modern history.

From here, cross the Tigris River by boat, offering a different perspective of Baghdad before continuing into the historic heart of the city. Walk along Al-Mutanabi Street, long regarded as one of Baghdad’s most important cultural and literary spaces. Explore the nearby Old Bazaar and Copper Market, where traditional shops and workshops provide a glimpse into the commercial character of old Baghdad.

Take a break at Al-Shabander Café, a historic meeting place known for its traditional atmosphere. Enjoy Iraqi tea and dried lime tea while taking in the character of this long-standing Baghdad institution.

The afternoon takes you beyond the capital to Ctesiphon, the former imperial center of the Sassanian Empire. Here, see the imposing Taq Kasra, the enormous brick arch that remains the most celebrated surviving structure of ancient Ctesiphon.

Return to Baghdad and spend the evening in Al-Kadhimiya, a vibrant district combining religious importance with lively local streets and markets. Explore the evening market before visiting the Imam Musa al-Kadhim and Imam Muhammad al-Jawad shrine, recognized by its striking golden domes.

Day 3 | Babylon & Karbala

Leave Baghdad after breakfast and begin the journey south. Before continuing, stop at the Martyr Monument, one of the capital’s most distinctive modern monuments, viewed from outside.

The journey then leads to Babylon, where the remains of one of ancient Mesopotamia’s most influential cities await. Explore the archaeological area and learn about Babylon during the reign of King Nebuchadnezzar II, as well as the stories surrounding the legendary Hanging Gardens.

Within the site, visit the former Saddam Hussein Palace. Perched above the archaeological landscape, the building provides broad views over the remains of ancient Babylon and its surrounding area.

Continue onward to Karbala, a city of profound religious significance.

Your visit includes the Imam Abbas Shrine, honoring Al-Abbas ibn Ali and his role in the events of the Battle of Karbala. You will then visit the Imam Hussein Shrine, dedicated to Imam Hussein ibn Ali, whose martyrdom holds central importance in Islamic history and Shia tradition.

Day 4 | Najaf & Return to Baghdad

Continue the journey to Najaf, a major center of Islamic scholarship and pilgrimage.

Start at the Great Mosque of Kufa, an important early Islamic site associated with Imam Ali and the formative history of Islam. The mosque complex also contains a number of significant shrines linked to figures and events from the early Islamic period.

Next, visit the Imam Ali Holy Shrine, one of the most revered religious landmarks in Iraq and the burial place of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib.

The final visit in Najaf is to Wadi Al-Salam (Valley of Peace). Stretching across a vast area beside the city, this historic cemetery has served as a place of burial for centuries and is regarded as the world’s largest cemetery.

After completing the visits in Najaf, travel back to Baghdad, arriving in the evening.

Day 5 | Samarra & Baghdad

Today, travel north from Baghdad toward Samarra, a former Abbasid capital and an important center of early Islamic architecture.

Explore the Great Mosque of Samarra, best known for its remarkable Malwiya Minaret, whose unusual spiral form has become an enduring symbol of Samarra. The mosque is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Samarra.

Continue to the Abu Dalaf Mosque, located near Samarra. Its expansive layout and distinctive spiral minaret reflect the architectural traditions developed during the Abbasid period.

On the return journey toward Baghdad, stop at Dur-Kurigalzu, the remains of an important Kassite settlement established during the 14th–13th centuries BCE.
