Day 2 – Historical Baghdad & Ctesiphon
We start the day at Liberation Square, one of Baghdad’s most iconic landmarks and a powerful symbol of the city’s modern history. Its bold monuments and open space have witnessed many defining moments, and today it continues to serve as a lively meeting point where the pulse of the capital can truly be felt.
From there, we enjoy a short boat ride along the Tigris River before arriving at Al-Mutanabbi Street, the cultural soul of Baghdad. This historic book market is filled with life, where stalls overflow with literature, art, and conversation, reflecting the city’s deep intellectual and literary traditions.
We then continue to the Abbasid Palace, a rare surviving structure from Baghdad’s golden era. Its impressive arches and timeless design offer a glimpse into the grandeur of the Abbasid period, when the city stood at the center of global knowledge and culture.
A walk through the nearby Old Bazaar and the vibrant Copper Market follows, where narrow alleys come alive with craftsmanship, trade, and everyday local energy. The atmosphere here captures the authentic rhythm of historic Baghdad.
Later, we head out to Ctesiphon, home to the monumental Taq Kasra arch. This towering structure is one of the most remarkable surviving feats of ancient architecture in Mesopotamia, echoing the power and sophistication of the Sassanian Empire.
We conclude the day at the Imam Kadhim Shrine, a deeply revered spiritual site known for its golden domes and intricate detailing. It remains a major center of devotion and reflection, drawing visitors from across the region.

Day 3 | Karbala Babylon
We begin the day with a visit to the Martyr Monument in Baghdad . This striking landmark stands as a powerful tribute to Iraq’s history and those who lost their lives in the Iran–Iraq War, offering a reflective introduction to the day’s journey.
We then continue toward the ancient city of Babylon, one of the most important cradles of Mesopotamian civilization, dating back to the 18th–6th century BC. Here, we explore the legendary ruins and hear stories of the famous Hanging Gardens—long associated with King Nebuchadnezzar’s palace and recognized in ancient accounts as one of the Seven Wonders of the Hellenic world, though its physical remains have never been definitively proven.
Nearby, we visit the Saddam Hussein Palace, now a museum overlooking Babylon. Built on elevated ground, it reflects a modern interpretation inspired by the grandeur of Nebuchadnezzar’s ancient royal palace, offering sweeping views of the historic site below.
After the visit, we travel onward to Karbala, one of the most sacred cities in Iraq and an important center of pilgrimage.
Upon arrival, we check in at a hotel and enjoy some time to rest before continuing our spiritual visits.
In the evening, we explore the magnificent Imam Abbas Shrine, the resting place of Abbas ibn Ali, a deeply revered figure in Islamic history known for his loyalty and sacrifice during the Battle of Karbala. The shrine stands as a symbol of devotion, bravery, and brotherhood, drawing millions of visitors each year.
We then proceed to the nearby Imam Hussain Shrine, one of the most important holy sites in Shia Islam. It marks the burial place of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad and a central figure in Islamic history, remembered for his stand at Karbala and his commitment to justice and faith.
Overnight in Karbala.
Day 4 | Najaf Ur
The day begins in the holy city of Najaf, where we visit the vast and deeply spiritual Wadi al-Salam Cemetery. Known as the world’s largest burial ground, it holds millions of graves and carries centuries of religious and historical significance, offering a powerful reflection of Iraq’s spiritual heritage.
We then continue our journey south toward Uruk, one of the earliest known cities in human history. Dating back to around 4000–3000 BCE, Uruk is widely regarded as the world’s first true urban center and a major cradle of Sumerian civilization.
Here, we explore the remains of ancient structures, including early ziggurat foundations, and learn about the origins of cuneiform writing one of humanity’s earliest writing systems. Uruk is also closely associated with the legendary King Gilgamesh and the epic that bears his name.
From Uruk, we proceed to Nasiriyah, where we visit the iconic Ziggurat of Ur. This massive stepped structure once served as a major religious and administrative center in ancient Mesopotamia.
Unlike the smooth pyramids of Egypt, the Ziggurat rises in distinct terraced levels, showcasing the architectural ingenuity of the Sumerians. Today, it remains one of Iraq’s most remarkable archaeological landmarks and a powerful reminder of its ancient legacy.
Overnight in Nasiriyah.
Day 5 | Marshes of Iraq – Baghdad
Today we journey into the remarkable Mesopotamian Marshes, the largest wetland ecosystem in the Middle East and one of Iraq’s most unique natural landscapes. These lush waterways are home to diverse bird and fish species and have long been the ancestral homeland of the Marsh Arabs, many of whom continue efforts to preserve their traditional lifestyle.
During our visit, we take time to relax in the peaceful surroundings, enjoy a traditional cup of tea, and meet local families who share stories of life in the marshes and their deep connection to this extraordinary environment.
We then set out on a boat ride aboard a traditional “shakhtura,” gliding through narrow channels and open waters, experiencing the marshes in the same way generations have for centuries.
For lunch, we enjoy the iconic Iraqi dish “masgouf” freshly grilled over reeds rather than wood, served in a traditional reed-built guesthouse known as an “al-mudhif,” offering an authentic taste of local hospitality.
Overnight in Baghdad
Day 6 | Samarra Mosul
We begin the day with a visit to the iconic Great Mosque of Samarra, a masterpiece of 9th-century Abbasid architecture. Best known for its striking spiral minaret, the Malwiya Tower, the mosque was built to serve the call to prayer and remains one of the most distinctive Islamic structures in the world. Its unique corkscrew design allows visitors to climb the exterior ramp, rewarding them with sweeping views over the historic city of Samarra.
We then continue to Abu Dalaf Mosque, another remarkable Abbasid-era site. This lesser-known gem features a large rectangular layout and a spiral minaret inspired by the Malwiya, reflecting the architectural creativity and scale of early Islamic civilization.
On our way north toward Mosul, we stop at Hatra, an extraordinary ancient fortified city that once thrived as a major religious and trading center of the Parthian Empire between the 3rd century BCE and 3rd century CE. Surrounded by massive defensive walls, Hatra is famous for its fusion of Greco-Roman and Eastern architectural styles, as well as its well-preserved temples and sculptural remains. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it stands as one of Iraq’s most important archaeological treasures.
We then continue our journey to Mosul.
Overnight in Mosul
Day 7 | Mosul Erbil
We begin the day in Mosul by exploring the remains of the ancient Assyrian city walls, part of the vast defensive system built by the Assyrian Empire. These monumental stone and mudbrick fortifications once protected one of the most powerful civilizations of the ancient world, reflecting remarkable military engineering and urban planning.
We then move into the historic Old City of Mosul, one of the oldest continuously inhabited urban areas in the Middle East. Once a major cultural and commercial hub, the area endured severe destruction during recent conflicts, including the period of ISIS control, leaving behind a powerful reminder of both loss and resilience.
As we walk through its reconstructed streets, we experience the living spirit of Mosul through its traditional bazaars, historic mosques, and ancient churches. Despite the hardships it has faced, the Old City continues to reflect a rich tapestry of cultural and religious diversity, and a strong sense of renewal shaped by its people.
