7-Day Iraq Tour Itinerary

Day 1 | Arrival in Baghdad

Upon arrival at Baghdad International Airport, our team will welcome you and transfer you to your hotel. After check-in, enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure and prepare for the journey ahead.

Day 2 | Baghdad Tour & Ctesiphon

After breakfast, we begin exploring Iraq’s capital with a visit to Liberation Square, one of Baghdad’s most recognizable public spaces. The monument represents key moments in Iraq’s contemporary history and remains an important gathering place for locals.

Next, we board a traditional boat for a relaxing cruise along the Tigris River before reaching the famous Al-Mutanabbi Street. Known as Baghdad’s literary heart, this historic street is lined with bookshops, cafés, and cultural landmarks that celebrate the city’s intellectual heritage.

From there, we wander through the historic Old Bazaar and the bustling Copper Market, where skilled artisans continue centuries-old metalworking traditions amid lively market streets.

Leaving central Baghdad, we travel to Ctesiphon, where the impressive Taq Kasra dominates the landscape. This enormous brick arch is one of the greatest surviving monuments of the Sassanian Empire and an outstanding example of ancient engineering.

Before returning to the hotel, we visit the magnificent Imam Kadhim Shrine, admired for its shimmering golden domes, intricate decoration, and immense religious importance.

Day 3 | Babylon & Karbala

Our day starts with a stop at the Martyr Monument, an architectural landmark dedicated to those who lost their lives during the Iran-Iraq War. Its distinctive design makes it one of Baghdad’s most recognizable monuments.

We then travel south to the legendary city of Babylon, one of the world’s greatest ancient civilizations. Walking among its archaeological remains, we discover the legacy of King Nebuchadnezzar II while learning about the famous Hanging Gardens, remembered in ancient writings as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Nearby, we visit the Saddam Hussein Palace, which overlooks Babylon from an elevated position. Today the building serves as a museum while offering panoramic views across the surrounding archaeological landscape.

In the afternoon, we continue to Karbala, one of Iraq’s most significant religious destinations.

After checking into the hotel, we visit the magnificent Imam Abbas Shrine, honoring Abbas ibn Ali, whose courage and loyalty during the Battle of Karbala remain deeply respected throughout the Islamic world.

A short distance away stands the Imam Hussain Shrine, the burial place of Imam Hussain, whose sacrifice at Karbala has made this one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Shia Islam.

Day 4 | Najaf, Uruk & Ur

This morning we travel to Najaf, where we visit the renowned Wadi al-Salam Cemetery. Covering an immense area and containing millions of graves, it is considered the largest cemetery in the world and holds exceptional religious significance.

Our journey then continues to Uruk, among the earliest urban settlements ever established. Dating back more than five thousand years, Uruk played a fundamental role in the rise of Sumerian civilization and the development of organized city life.

While exploring the archaeological remains, we learn about the origins of cuneiform writing and the city’s association with the legendary King Gilgamesh, one of history’s oldest literary figures.

Later, we arrive in Nasiriyah to visit the remarkable Ziggurat of Ur, one of Mesopotamia’s best-preserved monuments. Constructed in massive stepped terraces, this ancient temple complex once served as an important religious center dedicated to the moon god Nanna.

The impressive structure continues to stand as one of Iraq’s greatest archaeological treasures.

Day 5 | Mesopotamian Marshes & Basra

Today we discover the beautiful Mesopotamian Marshes, a UNESCO-recognized wetland and one of Iraq’s most distinctive natural environments. These waterways have supported the traditional lifestyle of the Marsh Arab communities for thousands of years.

During our visit, we meet locals, enjoy traditional Iraqi tea, and gain insight into the customs and daily life that continue to define the region.

We then board a traditional shakhtura boat to explore the maze of reed-lined channels and peaceful waterways that make the marshes so unique.

Lunch features Iraq’s famous masgouf, freshly grilled using reeds for fuel and served inside a traditional reed guesthouse known as a mudhif, providing an authentic local dining experience.

Day 6 | Basra & Return to Baghdad

Start the day by getting to know Basra through its history and heritage at the Basra Museum, where exhibits provide insight into the region’s rich past.

From there, take to the water on a boat ride along the Shatt al-Arab, passing riverside scenery and catching views of the Saddam Palace along the way.

Later, head into the older parts of the city to see Basra’s distinctive Shanasheel houses. Their carved wooden balconies, courtyards, stained-glass windows, and intricate details are characteristic of traditional Basrawi architecture. Although many have deteriorated over the years, the surviving houses offer a glimpse into the city’s architectural and cultural heritage.

After the excursion, we return to Baghdad.

Day 7 | Samarra & Dur-Kurigalzu

Today’s excursion begins in Samarra, where we visit the famous Great Mosque of Samarra, one of the most important monuments of the Abbasid period. The mosque is celebrated worldwide for its extraordinary spiral Malwiya Minaret, whose exterior ramp leads to spectacular views across the historic city.

We continue to the nearby Abu Dalaf Mosque, another impressive example of early Islamic architecture. Its expansive layout and distinctive spiral minaret demonstrate the remarkable achievements of Abbasid builders.

On our drive back toward Baghdad, we stop at Dur-Kurigalzu, the former capital established by the Kassite kings during the 14th century BCE. The archaeological remains preserve traces of an influential Mesopotamian city that once served as both a royal residence and administrative center.
