Itinerary

Day 1 | Arrival in Baghdad

Arrive at Baghdad International Airport, where our representative will meet you and arrange your transfer to the hotel. The rest of the day is free to rest, settle in, and prepare for the journey.

Day 2 | Baghdad’s Historic Heart

Begin the morning with an introduction to Baghdad, exploring several of the city’s most recognizable cultural and historic places.

Start at Liberation Square, an important landmark in modern Iraqi history. From there, cross the Tigris River aboard a traditional boat and make your way to Al-Mutanabbi Street. Known for its bookshops, cafés, and historic atmosphere, the street has long been associated with Baghdad’s literary and intellectual life.

Continue through the old bazaar and the traditional Copper Market, where craftsmen continue the long-standing tradition of working with copper by hand.

Later, take a break at Al-Shabander Café, one of the city’s historic gathering places. Enjoy a cup of traditional Iraqi tea or dried lime tea while taking in the atmosphere of old Baghdad.

In the afternoon, visit the impressive Arch of Ctesiphon (Taq Kasra), a remarkable surviving structure from the Sasanian period and one of the most significant ancient monuments near Baghdad.

Return to the city and spend the evening in Al-Kadhimiya. Explore its lively market before visiting the Al-Kadhimiya Shrine, admired for its ornate architecture and golden domes.

Day 3 | Samarra – Hatra – Mosul

Leave Baghdad after breakfast and head north toward Samarra, the former Abbasid capital and one of the great centers of the Islamic world during the 9th century.

Explore the remarkable Malwiya Minaret, the famous spiral minaret belonging to the Great Mosque of Samarra. Continue to the Abu Dulaf Mosque, another major Abbasid monument distinguished by its enormous courtyard and spiral tower.

The route then continues toward Mosul, with a major historical stop at Hatra. This ancient UNESCO World Heritage Site developed into an important trading and religious center under the Parthians. Its temples, fortified walls, sculptures, and monumental architecture reveal the mixture of cultural influences that shaped the city.

Continue onward to Mosul, arriving in the evening and settling into your hotel.

Day 4 | Mosul

Today begins with an exploration of Mosul, a historic city shaped by many civilizations and cultures over the centuries.

Visit the remains of the ancient Assyrian Wall, associated with the great city of Nineveh, before continuing into Mosul’s Old City. Walk through its historic streets and traditional bazaar while seeing the mosques, churches, and surviving buildings that form part of the city’s historic fabric.

The area suffered extensive damage during the conflict with ISIS, but restoration projects are gradually returning important parts of the Old City to life. The visit offers an opportunity to see both Mosul’s heritage and its continuing revival.

After leaving Mosul, travel south toward Ashur (Qal’at Sherqat), the earliest capital of the Assyrian Empire and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore the archaeological remains, including ancient temples, royal structures, and the ziggurat, while learning about the Assyrian civilization that once held influence across the Near East.

Continue back to Baghdad later in the day.

Day 5 | Baghdad to Babylon & Karbala

Check out from your Baghdad hotel and begin the journey south. Before leaving the capital, make a stop at the Martyr Monument. The monument is currently closed for maintenance, but you will have the opportunity to view it from nearby and appreciate its distinctive design and place in modern Iraqi history.

Continue to Babylon, the legendary ancient city that became one of the most influential centers of Mesopotamia.

Explore the archaeological remains and learn about Babylon during the reign of King Nebuchadnezzar II. See the Ishtar Gate area and Processional Way, along with the remains traditionally connected with the famous Hanging Gardens.

Above the archaeological landscape stands the former Saddam Palace, now converted into a museum. Its elevated position provides wide views over the remains of ancient Babylon.

Later, continue to Karbala and check into your hotel. After some time to rest, visit the Imam Abbas Shrine and Imam Hussein Shrine. Their illuminated courtyards and elaborate architecture create a particularly striking atmosphere in the evening.

Day 6 | Najaf & The Ancient Cities of Mesopotamia

After breakfast, depart Karbala for Najaf, one of Iraq’s most important spiritual centers.

Visit Wadi Al-Salam, the vast historic cemetery that stretches across much of Najaf and contains millions of graves. For centuries, it has been an important destination for pilgrims and remains one of the defining landmarks of the city.

Continue south toward Nasiriyah, entering the ancient landscape of southern Mesopotamia. If weather conditions allow, explore Uruk, one of the earliest known urban centers in human history and a site closely associated with the development of cities and cuneiform writing. The ancient city is also linked by tradition to Gilgamesh, the legendary king whose story survives in one of the world’s earliest literary works.

Continue to the Ziggurat of Ur, an extraordinary surviving monument from Sumerian civilization. The massive stepped structure rises prominently from the surrounding plain and provides a remarkable connection with Mesopotamia more than four millennia ago.

Arrive in Nasiriyah toward the evening.

Day 7 | Life in the Mesopotamian Marshes

Today the journey moves into one of Iraq’s most distinctive natural and cultural environments: the Mesopotamian Marshes.

Spend time among the waterways and reed landscapes that have supported the traditional life of the Marsh Arabs for generations. Meet local families, enjoy Iraqi tea, and experience the marshes from the water aboard a traditional shakhtura boat.

The boat journey takes you through narrow waterways surrounded by reeds and water buffalo, offering an intimate look at this unique wetland environment.

For lunch, enter a traditional reed-built mudhif and enjoy Masgouf, one of Iraq’s signature dishes, prepared by grilling the fish over an open fire using reeds.

Later, continue to Al-Qurnah, where you will see the legendary Tree of Adam, a site surrounded by local traditions and visited by people from different religious backgrounds.

Nearby, visit Al-Multaqa, the meeting point where the Tigris and Euphrates come together to form the Shatt al-Arab.

From here, continue to Basra.

Day 8 | Basra’s Heritage

Dedicate the final full day to Basra, the historic southern city once known as an important center of trade and maritime exchange.

visit the Basra Museum, where you can explore archaeological artifacts and exhibits highlighting the rich history and civilizations of southern Iraq. The museum provides insight into the region’s Sumerian, Babylonian, Assyrian, and Islamic heritage, adding another historical dimension to your time in Basra.

then take a boat ride along the Shatt al-Arab, seeing Basra from the water and enjoying views toward the riverside Saddam Palace.

Continue into the historic Shanasheel district, known for its distinctive traditional houses and finely crafted wooden balconies. Stained-glass windows, carved details, and narrow streets provide a glimpse into Basra’s architectural and commercial past.

Take time to walk through the neighborhood and appreciate its atmosphere before returning to the hotel.

After breakfast, your Iraq journey comes to an end. Transfer to Basra International Airport for your departure flight.
