Itinerary

Day 1 | Arrival in Basra

Arrive at Basra International Airport, where our team will welcome you and arrange your transfer to the hotel. The rest of the day is left open for you to unwind after your journey or take in your first impressions of southern Iraq at your own pace.

Day 2 | Historic Basra & the Shatt al-Arab

Start the day on the water with a boat cruise along the Shatt al-Arab, the major waterway formed where the Tigris and Euphrates meet. As you travel along the river, you will see the former riverside palace built during Saddam Hussein’s era.

The exploration then moves into the older parts of Basra, where the city’s traditional Shanasheel houses offer a glimpse into its architectural heritage. Their carved wooden balconies, stained-glass windows, large courtyards, and distinctive designs reflect the influence of Basra’s long history as a major trading center. Despite years of age and neglect, these historic homes remain important features of the city’s cultural landscape.

Day 3 | Basra Museum, Al-Qurnah & the Mesopotamian Marshes

After breakfast, visit the Basra Museum(closed on Fridays and Saturdays.) before leaving the city for Al-Qurnah.

Your first stop is the legendary Tree of Adam, a location surrounded by local traditions linking it with the descent of Adam to Earth and the prayers of Abraham. These traditions are not part of mainstream Islamic belief, but the site continues to attract Christian and Jewish pilgrims.

Continue to Al-Multaqa, the meeting point where the Tigris and Euphrates come together to form the Shatt al-Arab.

The journey then takes you deep into the Mesopotamian Marshes, one of the Middle East’s largest wetland environments and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, meet members of the Marsh Arab community and step inside a traditional Mudhif, a reed house where you can enjoy Iraqi tea and learn more about a way of life that has endured for thousands of years.

Continue through the marshes aboard a traditional Shakhtura boat, moving along the narrow waterways amid vast reed beds and local wildlife. Lunch is served in a traditional reed house, with the opportunity to try Masgouf, the region’s famous fish dish traditionally grilled over burning reeds.

Following the marsh experience, continue onward to Nasiriyah.

Overnight in Nasiriyah

Day 4 | Ziggurat of Ur & Babylon

Leave Nasiriyah and head toward the Ziggurat of Ur, one of the most impressive surviving monuments of ancient Mesopotamia. Built as a major religious center dedicated to the moon god Nanna, the enormous stepped structure stands as a remarkable testament to the achievements of Sumerian civilization.

From Ur, continue to the legendary city of Babylon, once among the most powerful and influential capitals of the ancient world.

Explore the archaeological remains, including the ceremonial processional route and the foundations of monuments associated with King Nebuchadnezzar II. Babylon is also traditionally linked with the Hanging Gardens, counted among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, although their precise location has never been established.

Continue to the former Saddam Hussein Palace, positioned overlooking the archaeological site. The building now serves as a museum and offers broad views across the remains of ancient Babylon.

After the visit, continue to Baghdad.

After breakfast, transfer to Baghdad International Airport for your departure, marking the end of your journey through southern Iraq and the ancient landscapes of Mesopotamia.
