Itinerary
Day 1 | Arrival in Basra
Arrive at Basra International Airport, where our team will welcome you and arrange your transfer to the hotel. The rest of the day is kept free to recover from your journey and settle into Basra.
Overnight in Basra
Day 2 | Basra Heritage & Shatt al-Arab
Begin the day with a visit to the Basra Museum, housed in a former riverside palace built during Saddam Hussein’s era and now home to an important collection of artifacts from southern Iraq. The museum showcases archaeological treasures from the Sumerian, Babylonian, and Assyrian periods, as well as Islamic-era objects, maritime trade relics, and exhibits highlighting the culture of Basra and the Mesopotamian Marshes.
After the visit, continue with a relaxing boat ride along the Shatt al-Arab, the waterway formed where the Tigris and Euphrates meet. During the cruise, you will see the former riverside palace built during Saddam Hussein’s era.
Continue through the older parts of Basra to see its distinctive Shanasheel houses. Their carved wooden balconies, stained-glass details, courtyards, and traditional designs reflect the city’s long history as an important trading center.
Overnight in Basra
Day 3 | Al-Qurnah, Marshes & Nasiriyah
Travel toward Al-Qurnah and visit the Tree of Adam, a location surrounded by longstanding local traditions connecting it with Adam and Abraham. The site is also visited by Christian and Jewish pilgrims.
Continue to Al-Multaqa, the meeting point of the Tigris and Euphrates, before heading deeper into the Mesopotamian Marshes.
Spend time with the Marsh Arab community and enter a traditional reed house, or Mudhif, where you can enjoy Iraqi tea and learn more about the region’s distinctive way of life.
The marshes are then explored by traditional Shakhtura boat, following narrow waterways through the reeds and surrounding wetlands. Lunch is served in a reed house and includes Masgouf, the famous Iraqi fish dish traditionally grilled over burning reeds.
After the marshes, continue onward to Nasiriyah.
Overnight in Nasiriyah
Day 4 | Ur, Uruk & Najaf
After breakfast, check out at 09:00 and travel to the ancient city of Ur. Explore the Ziggurat of Ur, one of the most impressive surviving monuments of ancient Mesopotamia and a defining example of ziggurat architecture.
Continue by road to Simawaha, followed by a visit to Uruk (not possible on rainy days). Once one of the most important urban centers of ancient Mesopotamia, Uruk flourished between approximately 4000 and 3000 BCE. The site is associated with early urban development, monumental architecture, the emergence of cuneiform writing, and the legendary king Gilgamesh.
After exploring Uruk, drive to Najaf.
Visit Wadi Al-Salam, also known as the Cemetery of Najaf or Valley of Peace. This vast historic cemetery is located close to the Imam Ali Holy Shrine and holds great religious importance.
Continue to the Imam Ali Holy Shrine, one of the most significant Shia Islamic sites and the burial place of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib.
Overnight in Najaf
Day 5 | Babylon & Baghdad
Depart Najaf and drive toward Babylon, one of the most renowned cities of the ancient Mesopotamian world. Explore the archaeological remains of Babylon, including the area associated with the legendary Hanging Gardens, traditionally linked to the reign of King Nebuchadnezzar II.
Continue to Saddam Palace, now used as a museum. Located above the archaeological site, the palace was designed with inspiration drawn from the architecture associated with ancient Babylon.
Continue to Baghdad for visits to the Martyr Monument, viewed from outside the fence, followed by Liberation Square, an important public space that has witnessed major demonstrations, political movements, and historic events in Baghdad.
Next, visit Firdous Square, known internationally for the toppling of Saddam Hussein’s statue on April 9, 2003.
Proceed to the hotel for check-in and some time to rest.
After sunset, head to Karada Market, one of Baghdad’s lively evening areas. Walk through its busy streets, browse local shops, sample street food such as shawarma and kebabs, and experience the atmosphere of Baghdad after dark while enjoying traditional Iraqi tea at a local café.
