Day 2 | Exploring Erbil

Today is dedicated to discovering the historic heart of Erbil. Start at the Erbil Citadel (viewed from the outside), the city’s most recognizable landmark and one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in the world. From its elevated position, take in views across the old city while learning about the long history of this important Kurdish center.

From the citadel, continue into Qaysari Bazaar, Erbil’s traditional covered market. Walk through its busy lanes lined with shops offering spices, textiles, handicrafts, and other local products, providing a glimpse into the city’s everyday commercial life.

Stop for lunch at a local restaurant and enjoy a selection of traditional Kurdish dishes.

In the afternoon, visit Choli Minaret, a distinctive monument from the 12th-century Atabeg period. Built of baked brick and featuring Egyptian tiles, the leaning minaret is the remaining part of a former mosque complex. The surrounding park also contains statues dedicated to prominent Kurdish intellectuals and poets, including Ibn Al-Mustawfi.

Day 3 | Duhok – Erbil

Leave Erbil in the morning and head toward the mountains, beginning the day’s journey at Mar Mattai Monastery. Located high on Mount Alfaf, this ancient Christian monastery combines a dramatic mountain setting with a long history of religious scholarship and tradition.

Continue to the nearby historic town of Al Qosh, known for its stone-built houses, Christian heritage, and distinctive character.

The journey then continues to Rabban Hormizd Monastery, an important historic monastery built into the rugged mountainside above Al Qosh. While access to parts of the complex is restricted, its location and architectural setting provide a memorable stop.

Continue to Lalish, the holiest religious center of the Yazidi faith. Explore its sacred spaces, distinctive temples, and tranquil courtyards while gaining an understanding of the traditions surrounding this important pilgrimage site.

Proceed to Khinis, where ancient Assyrian rock carvings and reliefs are preserved directly on the mountainside. The scenes of rulers, gods, and royal ceremonies offer an insight into the artistic and political world of ancient Assyria.

Next, visit Jerwan, the site of the Assyrian aqueduct associated with King Sennacherib. The surviving remains demonstrate the sophisticated water-management and engineering techniques developed during the Assyrian period.

After completing the day’s visits, return to Erbil.

Why Travel with Local Guides in Iraq

Exploring Iraq with a local guide gives you more than transportation between landmarks. It allows you to understand the history, people, and traditions behind the places you visit while having an experienced team to help you navigate the country.

  • Put Iraq’s history into context, with local knowledge covering ancient Mesopotamia, Islamic heritage, and more recent history.
  • Travel with greater peace of mind, knowing that transportation, daily movements, and local arrangements are coordinated by an experienced team.
  • See beyond the main attractions, with insight into local customs, everyday life, and stories that are easy to miss when traveling independently.
  • Visit diverse parts of Iraq with confidence, from major archaeological sites and historic cities to remote areas and religious landmarks.
  • Have local support throughout your journey, from your arrival in Iraq until the end of your trip.
